A healthy community needs access to quality education. Unfortunately, for residents of Estella Maxey Housing Project this access is not always available. In the East Waco community, children are disproportionately affected by social structure. Their schools under perform as a result of systems that deny schools equal resources. Therefore, Restoration Haven seeks to bridge the gap for these students and help them achieve academic success.
The program currently provides one-on-one education and mentoring support to Estella Maxey residents. These students come from low income households, primarily single-parent families, and many of these students currently perform below their grade level. By partnering with Baylor University volunteers and interns, RHI provides tutoring and homework assistance in the areas of reading and math. A holistic experience, Trail Blazers offers not only academic but social development with long term volunteers through recreational time. RHI also partners with City Square in supplying an after school meals.
